Oh, what an amazing life!
Colonel Bill Behrens packed a lot of life into his 87 years. From a small farm in South Dakota to the Amazon jungle to the steamy streets of Naples to the X-15 project, his colorful exploits were the basis of the many "shaggy dog" stories for which he was famous. |

Col Bill was a career Army-Air Force officer. He started his military service in the South Dakota National Guard. After his service in World War II, he was stationed in British Guiana where he hunted and fished and worked a played-out diamond mine. He counted as friends famous barnstorming bush pilots like Jimmy Angel who hiked for 11 days out of the jungle after landing at the top of the falls a breathtaking then unnamed falls. At 2,421 feet to the river below, Angel Falls is the tallest free fall waterfall on earth and at 2,937 feet overall, it is 15 times taller than Niagra Falls. And, what better way to end a day then bellying up to the bar to hear about those exploits?

After BG, he was stationed at Kirkland AFB in Albuquerque, NM. At the dawn of the nuclear age, he participated in atomic testing at White Sands. In between those tests, there was more hunting, more fishing and more bellying up to the bar at the Officers’ Club at the end of the day to talk about those exploits and plan the next hunting and camping trip. At Edwards Air Force Base in California, Col. Bill worked on the X-15 Project as well as with the test pilots in the early astronaut training program made famous in the "Right Stuff" ~ the ultimate “shaggy dog” story and the ultimate barnstorming pilots who belly’d up to the bar at the Officers’ Club at the end of the day to talk about those exploits and plan the next hunting and camping trip. It was a great life. When he retired in 1963 after 30 years, he moved to the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley where he was hired as the first manager of the Port of Clarkston and worked to develop the port. He spent every day for nearly twenty-five years of his working life on his beloved Snake River. |
